EdgeDeflector Alternatives and Troubleshooting Tips

Fix Windows Link Hijacking with EdgeDeflector — Quick Setup

What it does

EdgeDeflector intercepts Windows protocol links (like microsoft-edge:) so they open in your chosen browser instead of being forced into Microsoft Edge.

Quick setup (Windows ⁄11)

  1. Download EdgeDeflector
    • Get the latest release from the official project page (GitHub).
  2. Install
    • Run the installer; on some builds you may need to unblock the file before running (right-click → Properties → Unblock).
  3. Set EdgeDeflector as handler
    • Open Settings → Apps → Default apps.
    • Scroll to “Choose default apps by protocol.”
    • Find the protocol microsoft-edge and set its handler to EdgeDeflector.
  4. Verify
    • Click a link that normally forces Edge (e.g., a News widget link or a Microsoft Store “Open in browser” link). It should open in your default browser.
  5. Troubleshooting
    • If the microsoft-edge protocol reverts or EdgeDeflector isn’t listed: reboot, reinstall EdgeDeflector, or repeat the default-apps step.
    • For Windows updates that break the handler, reapply Step 3 after the update.
    • If a browser extension conflicts, check that your target browser is set as the system default.

Notes

  • EdgeDeflector works by registering as the protocol handler; Windows updates can occasionally reset that.
  • If you prefer alternatives, consider browser extensions or third-party apps that intercept and redirect links.
